If you have a baby monitor with a camera that works on your wireless network, then you need to make sure that you have changed the default username and password. Many of the ‘smart’ baby monitors allow you to view the camera image from your iPhone or other smartphone, as well as from your computer. Hackers have been using the default username and password to see the feed from your camera, and there are actually websites that are dedicated to showing these unsecured feeds online for the world to see! Most of these smart monitors come with a ‘default’ username and password that you can use to login to the software. Once you get in though, you need to change this information.
A nanny in Texas was recently startled by a voice coming over the monitor. At first she thought it was the baby’s parents playing a trick on her. But after she talked with both of them, they realized that it was a stranger’s voice, and she unplugged the camera. The voice had told her that she should probably change the monitor’s password.
The camera involved in this incident is a Foscam monitor. They have a link on their website homepage for ‘Five Steps to Secure Your Foscam Camera’. Unfortunately, we have not been able to get this link to work, but we did find this article on their site they may you give you a few clues for securing your monitor.
