The secret to having a successful baby shower is to plan, plan, plan, and plan ahead! When planning for a baby shower, there are several questions that everyone seems to ask:
1. Who should throw the shower?
In days past, it was considered improper etiquette for anyone closely related to the mom-to-be to give the shower. According to Miss Manners, it is considered rude for family members to ask for gifts for their family. But in the 21st century, this tradition is not “strictly enforced” 🙂 Nowadays, it’s considered perfectly acceptable for a sister, mother-in-law or even mother to host the shower. I’ve even heard of some expectant moms throwing their own showers, but that’s very unusual!
2. When should the baby shower happen?
The traditional time frame is 4 to 6 weeks before the due date. That is far enough into the pregnancy, but yet early enough that the baby is very unlikely to arrive before the shower date! However, there are always exceptions to this traditional time. You may need to plan your date around family or friends that will be traveling to attend. Or in some cases, the parents-to-be may want to wait until after the baby is born. In fact, in some cultures it is considered to be bad luck to acquire baby items before the baby arrives!
3. Who should be invited to the baby shower?
Mom-to-be should definitely be consulted about the guest list. Close friends and family members, work friends, church family… the possibilities are endless, but make sure to ask the parents-to-be to avoid inviting anyone that they don’t want in attendance. Another consideration is will there be more than one shower? If so, you may not want to invite someone who has already attended a shower (and already given a gift!).
4. Does the baby shower need to have a theme?
No theme is required 🙂 But of course, ask your mom-to-be! Some moms want the whole themed experience with games, flowers, balloons, etc., while others may prefer something more simple and casual. Take your cues from the expectant mother and design your plan around her preferences.
There are so many more questions about invitations, second babies, refreshments, cakes, and the list goes on. For more information about planning a baby shower, check out these great articles:
