Planning a Baby Shower?
The secret to having a successful baby shower is to plan, plan, plan, and plan ahead! When planning for a baby shower, there are several questions that everyone seems to ask:
1. Who should throw the shower?
In days past, it was considered improper etiquette for anyone closely related to the mom-to-be to give the shower. According to Miss Manners, it is considered rude for family members to ask for gifts for their family. But in the 21st century, this tradition is not “strictly enforced” 🙂 Nowadays, it’s considered perfectly acceptable for a sister, mother-in-law or even mother to host the shower. I’ve even heard of some expectant moms throwing their own showers, but that’s very unusual!
2. When should the baby shower happen?
The traditional time frame is 4 to 6 weeks before the due date. That is far enough into the pregnancy, but yet early enough that the baby is very unlikely to arrive before the shower date! However, there are always exceptions to this traditional time. You may need to plan your date around family or friends that will be traveling to attend. Or in some cases, the parents-to-be may want to wait until after the baby is born. In fact, in some cultures it is considered to be bad luck to acquire baby items before the baby arrives!
3. Who should be invited to the baby shower?
Mom-to-be should definitely be consulted about the guest list. Close friends and family members, work friends, church family… the possibilities are endless, but make sure to ask the parents-to-be to avoid inviting anyone that they don’t want in attendance. Another consideration is will there be more than one shower? If so, you may not want to invite someone who has already attended a shower (and already given a gift!).
4. Does the baby shower need to have a theme?
No theme is required 🙂 But of course, ask your mom-to-be! Some moms want the whole themed experience with games, flowers, balloons, etc., while others may prefer something more simple and casual. Take your cues from the expectant mother and design your plan around her preferences.
There are so many more questions about invitations, second babies, refreshments, cakes, and the list goes on. For more information about planning a baby shower, check out these great articles:

Rules for Naming Your Baby?
The pregnancy test was positive, and you’ve confirmed it with your OB/GYN. Maybe you’ve even had your first ultrasound and you know if you’re having a boy or a girl… now comes one of the greatest joys of this miracle – brainstorming for the perfect name for your new little one!
Then comes the realization that choosing your baby’s name is an enormous responsibility! This choice could potentially affect your child for the rest of his/her life. Some may choose a family name, while others want to be as creative as possible so their child has a unique name. Whatever the reasoning behind your possible choices, there are some “rules” that might help you to make this decision, and also keep you from picking a “bad” baby name. 🙂 But in the end, name your baby what YOU want. (Rule number 25 – Don’t listen to anyone else!).
Here are some of the 25 Rules for Naming Your Baby from thestir.com:
Don’t Name Your Child After Food: this one may seem obvious but we have all heard the stories of someone who knows someone who named their baby after some kind of fruit, etc. I seem to recall a story I once heard about the name Orangelo, because the mom loved orange jello during her pregnancy!
Avoid Names That People Hate: I read this list and personally loved many of the names on the list, so remember rule number 25!
Avoid Names With 8,000 Different Spellings: like Caitlyn. Kaitlyn, Catelyn, Caitlin… oops I think I might have missed this one when I named my daughter… 🙂
Consider Your Kid’s Initials: When initials spell a word, it can lead to teasing… just ask Ashley Suzanne Smith…
Avoid Adjectives: yes, a soccer player named his son Trendy last year. Others to avoid would include Heavenly, Splendid, Scenic, etc.
